Document Delivery vs. Interlibrary Loan

  • The patron is responsible for return postage charges. To return borrowed items, students should mail the materials using U.S. Postal Service, book rate and obtain a tracking number to protect themselves and the Library.
  • Materials may be renewed Online or by contacting the Circulation Desk at (256) 782-5758.
  • Do not phone requests.
  • Make sure you read the Copyright Restrictions section prior to submitting your request.
  • See the Houston Cole Library Policy and Procedures Manual for more specific information.
Printed materials owned by the Library
Document Delivery Service is available to JSU Distance Education students and faculty who reside outside Calhoun County and in an area where no formal agreement exits between JSU and the local library. Printed materials owned by the Library will be loaned and sent to JSU distance education students and faculty. Requests should be limited to JSU distance education course related research. JSU students enrolled in courses at the Gadsden State Community College branch should request document delivery through the Meadows Learning Resource Center.

Printed materials NOT owned by the Library
Interlibrary Loan Service is available to faculty, staff, graduate, and undergraduate students engaged in thesis or senior paper research.
Questions about the Interlibrary Loan service should be directed to ILL service at 256-782-5243.

Fines:  $0.25 per day for a period of 21 days, after which the item is charged to the LOST status.

Holds and recalls: Holds and recalls are requests in which a patron is added to a waiting list for an item currently charged to another patron.

Renewing: Items may be renewed a maximum number of 3 times. Additional renewals can be made at the discretion of the Public Services staff at 256-782-5758.

Renewing Materials

Your checked out items may be renewed:
  • Online: login to your library account with your Faculty/Student ID and last name. Once you are logged in, a list of items checked out on your library card will appear.
  • Phone: Call 256-782-5758
  • In-person: 1st floor Circulation Desk

Finding Printed Journals/Books

If you already have searched the electronic resources, but could not find the article/book you needed, you may check out out the print holdings.

Step 1: Go to the Library catalog and search with journal title or book title.
Step 2: Check the bibliography record and find if the library has the specific volume/issue of jouranl or book.

If the Library owns it, then fill out the Document Delivery Request Form if you are an eligible distance student. 
If the Library does not own it, then fill out the Interlibrary Loan Request Form if you are eligble.

Before making a book delivery request, distance students are encouraged to check out printed materials from other libraries.

  • Your local public library. You may go to WorldCat, search for the book, then click on the "Libraries Worldwide" link on the web page to find out if any local public library has the book.
  • You may also use the resource sharing program with other university libraries in Alabama. If you live close to Auburn University, Auburn University at Montgomery, University of Alabama, and University of Alabama at Birmingham, You may place on-line requests and/or check out items from any of these with an approved photo ID.
  • You may apply a student ID by complete the Distance Education Student ID Request Form. If you have questions, please contact Office of Educational Technology and Support at DLInfo@jsu.edu.

Borrow Reserved Materials

  • Items placed on reserve may have a loan period of either one hour, 24 hours, three days, or one week.
  • One hour reserve material must not leave the library.
