Database Searching Tips

CINAHL Complete opens to the Advanced Search screen. You will see search boxes connected by AND. AND, OR, and NOT in a drop-down menu. These are known as Boolean operators. AND narrows your search, OR broadens it, and NOT excludes terms you don't need.

Truncation is another useful search strategy. Use the * symbol to search for varying word endings.Searching on caring and theor* will find theory, theories, theorists, Some example searches to try are:

  • caring AND philosoph*
  • caring AND theor*
  • caring AND defin*
  • caring AND concept*
  • caring AND (religious OR religion* OR theolog*)
  • compassion AND theor* AND psycholog*

You can limit results In the Advanced Search screen if your search is too broad and finds too many results. Under Refine Results on the left sidebar, you can select checkboxes to help narrow results. These include:

  • Academic journals
  • Date of publication
  • Language

To find examples of concept analysis articles, type "concept analysis" in one search box, and your term in another box. Using quotes will search as a phrase.
